[DE] Mit “Je t’autorise à être moi, je m’autorise à être toi" präsentiert die Galerie Glaab eine umfassende Ausstellung mit Werken der Künstlerin ORLAN. Im Mittelpunkt steht der gleichnamige Werkzyklus, in dem die international renommierte französische Künstlerin Pionierinnen aus Kunst, Film, Literatur, Politik, Sport und Wissenschaft seit dem 15. Jahrhundert würdigt wie Artemisia Gentileschi, Marie Curie oder Rosa Parks. Diese Frauen ebneten mit mutigen Entscheidungen und unter oft hohen persönlichen Risiken den Weg für nachfolgende Generationen – nicht selten bis hin zum Verlust ihres Lebens. Über lange Zeit hinweg vergessen, verdrängt oder kaum rezipiert, holt ORLAN sie durch ihre künstlerische Praxis zurück ins öffentliche Bewusstsein.
Wie in ihrem Gesamtwerk überschreitet ORLAN auch hier Grenzen zwischen künstlerischen Medien, Epochen, Geschlechtern und Hautfarben. Durch die Hybridisierung mit dem Anderen entsteht eine symbolische Begegnung zwischen Frauen über Jahrhunderte hinweg – ein Akt der Schwesternschaft, den ORLAN als „Künstlerkuss“ beschreibt. In Anlehnung an das Genre des historischen Porträts realisiert sie digitale Fotomontagen, die großformatig auf Leinwand gedruckt werden. [EN] With “Je t'autorise à être moi, je m'autorise à être toi,” Galerie Glaab presents a comprehensive exhibition of works by the artist ORLAN. The focus is on the eponymous series of works in which the internationally renowned French artist pays tribute to female pioneers in art, film, literature, politics, sports, and science since the 15th century like Artemisia Gentileschi, Marie Curie or Rosa Parks. With courageous decisions and often at great personal risk, these women paved the way for subsequent generations – not infrequently at the cost of their lives. Long forgotten, suppressed, or barely acknowledged, ORLAN brings them back into public consciousness through her artistic practice.
As in her entire oeuvre, ORLAN transcends boundaries between artistic media, eras, genders, and skin colors. Through hybridization with the other, a symbolic encounter between women across centuries emerges—an act of sisterhood that ORLAN describes as an “artist's kiss.” Drawing on the genre of historical portraiture, she creates digital photomontages that are printed in large format on canvas. Her work questions social norms regarding the body, identity, gender, and power structures. ORLAN gained international recognition through her radical body performances and the use of surgical procedures as a means of artistic expression, as well as through her bio-art and numerous avatars, including a robot that resembles her, speaks with her voice, and answers questions from the audience in any language. She lives and works in Paris, New York, and Los Angeles.

L'accent est mis sur la série éponyme dans laquelle l'artiste française de renommée internationale rend hommage aux pionnières dans les domaines de l'art, du cinéma, de la littérature, de la politique, du sport et des sciences depuis le XVe siècle comme Marie Curie, Artemisia Gentileschi ou Rosa Parks. Grâce à des décisions courageuses et souvent au péril de leur vie, ces femmes ont ouvert la voie aux générations suivantes. Longtemps oubliées, réprimées ou à peine reconnues, ORLAN les ramène dans la conscience collective à travers sa pratique artistique.
