Mit FEMALE ARTISTS – PHOTOGRAPHY AND BEYOND präsentiert die Galerie Glaab auf der photo basel 2026 ein breites Spektrum zeitgenössischer Künstlerinnen, die Fotografie und bildbasierte Medien nutzen, um zentrale Fragen von Identität, Körper, Gender, Erotik, Sexualität, Technologie, gesellschaftlicher Teilhabe und Selbstinszenierung zu reflektieren. Im Rahmen der Präsentation sind ausgewählte Arbeiten von Marina Abramović, Arvida Byström, Sophie Calle, Nan Goldin oder Anne Imhof zu sehen. Die Ausstellung verdeutlicht die Vielfalt feministischer und postfeministischer Ansätze, in denen Künstlerinnen die Grenzen traditioneller Darstellungsformen überschreiten und neue visuelle Narrative entwickeln.
Einen Schwerpunkt der Präsentation bildet die bekannte Serie The Eros of Flowers (1999–2004) der chinesischen Künstlerin Xiao Hui Wang (*1957). In diesen Arbeiten nutzt sie das Medium der Fotografie, um poetische und symbolisch aufgeladene Bildwelten zu schaffen, in denen Körper, Erotik, Identität und kulturelle Transformation miteinander verwoben sind. Wang zählt zu den wichtigsten zeitgenössischen Künstlerinnen Chinas, sie erhielt zahlreiche bedeutende Auszeichnungen. In Shanghai befindet ich ein ihr gewidmetes Kunstmuseum.
Einen weiteren Fokus legt die Galerie auf die monumentale Arbeiten der französischen Künstlerin ORLAN (*1947) aus der Serie Je t’autorise à être moi, je m’autorise à être toi. Während der Messe ausgestellt ist eines der bedeutendsten Werke aus der Serie mit 31 Arbeiten. Die Arbeit Artemisia Gentileschi (2024), in dem ORLAN die barocke Malerin und eine der ersten international anerkannten Künstlerinnen der Kunstgeschichte als Ausgangspunkt nimmt, um Fragen von weiblicher Selbstbestimmung, künstlerischer Autorität, Machtstrukturen und der historischen Sichtbarkeit von Künstlerinnen zu reflektieren.
Darüber hinaus zeigt die Galerie Arbeiten der japanischen Künstlerin Saeko Ehara (*1985) aus den Serien Moments in Passing und Moments in Bloom (2025), in denen Ehara mithilfe von KI und digitalen Bildbearbeitungsprogrammen neue visuelle Formen zwischen Fotografie, künstlicher Intelligenz und poetischer Bildkomposition entwickelt.
With FEMALE ARTISTS – PHOTOGRAPHY AND BEYOND, Galerie Glaab presents at photo basel 2026 a broad spectrum of contemporary female artists who use photography and image-based media to reflect on central questions of identity, the body, gender, eroticism, sexuality, technology, social participation, and self-representation. Selected works by Marina Abramović, Arvida Byström, Sophie Calle, Nan Goldin or Arvida Byström will be presented. The exhibition highlights the diversity of feminist and postfeminist approaches through which artists expand the boundaries of traditional forms of representation and develop new visual narratives.
A central focus of the presentation is the well-known series The Eros of Flowers (1999–2004) by the Chinese artist Xiao Hui Wang (*1957). In these works, she uses photography to create poetic and symbolically charged visual worlds in which body, eroticism, identity, and cultural transformation are interwoven. Wang is one of China‘s most important contemporary artists and has received numerous prestigious awards. There is an art museum dedicated to her in Shanghai.
The gallery places an additional focus on the monumental works of the French artist ORLAN (*1947) from the series Je t’autorise à être moi, je m’autorise à être toi. On view during the fair is one of the most significant works from this series of 31 pieces. The work Artemisia Gentileschi (2024), in particular, sees ORLAN take the Baroque painter—one of the first internationally recognized women artists in art history—as a point of departure to explore questions of female self-determination, artistic authority, power structures, and the historical visibility of women artists.
The gallery also presents works by the Japanese artist Saeko Ehara (*1985) from the series Moments in Passing and Moments in Bloom (2025), in which she employs artificial intelligence and digital image-editing tools to develop new visual forms situated between photography, AI, and poetic image composition.
